Vigilante

Created by Reed Mascola, Paranoia Rising Games

Vigilante is a 3 to 5-player semi-cooperative game where you recruit heroes and fight villains to complete your secret objective!

Latest Updates from Our Project:

An Intergalactic Criminal, Redeemed
about 3 years ago – Mon, Apr 12, 2021 at 05:07:43 AM

This weekend started off great with Vigilante funding (thanks to all of you!), and we are moving towards our first stretch goal. At $12,000 (CAD), we'll unlock a new hero!

In addition to any stretch goals unlocked, we have revealed loads of extra content and have more on its way:

  • New Scenario for 3 to 5 players: Fantasy Draft
  • New Starter Hero: Barbara Yaga
  • New Villain: Crimson Warrior
  • New Villain: Technisha
  • New Agency Card: Classified Intel
  • New Hero: Lunaria (shown below)
  • 2 New Heroes (upcoming!)

I'm pleased to present the first of three contest-winning heroes from our Facebook group - Lunaria! This was a submission from Ed, Brianne, and Nina.

Lunaria is a reformed space-criminal who through tragedy swore an oath to protect those the defenseless and downtrodden. She is a master of combat and telekinesis, though she keeps to the shadows to avoid detection. Her worst fears are that the Agency will pick her up and experiment on her.

In Vigilante, Lunaria is quite effective at fighting villains and her ability helps all players in the event that their hero is defeated.  Players have plenty of incentive to recruit Lunaria and having her in play will give players better recovery.

Hopefully you all had a great weekend and thanks again for the support!

Vigilante is FUNDED!!!
about 3 years ago – Sun, Apr 11, 2021 at 12:43:19 PM

Vigilante is now 100% funded!!! Thank you everyone for making this happen! I'm overwhelmed (in a good way) by all the support from friends and family, by new friends, by backers, and store owners that have shown an interest in Vigilante. For the last 5 years, this game has evolved from scraps of paper in sleeves to the gorgeous product you see today.

My commitment is to put out the best version of Vigilante... a game that I hope you'll all enjoy for years to come!

Thanks again,

The Agency Does Their Research, and a New Drafting Scenario?
about 3 years ago – Fri, Apr 09, 2021 at 09:33:13 AM

At the time of writing this update, we are 91% funded! It's Friday, and I wanted to give a BIG update to start the weekend right. Today we look at a new Scenario that changes up the way you play, and a new Agency card that adds further consistency and player agency (pun intended).

As an aside, we are committed to the best component quality, to keep Vigilante at your table and in good shape for years to come. For this reason, we have opted for black core cards (300gsm) with linen finish.

We've covered Identities in a previous update - the various secret missions that a player could have. Prior to this update, we also have 3 ways to play Vigilante:

  •  Brought to Justice: The recommended beginner Scenario, where a set number of players are good, evil, and neutral based on what is printed on the Scenario card.
  •  Shifting Allegiances: Similar to Brought to Justice, but with one major twist - there's only 1 confirmed good Identity in the game. The others are random. This mode could end up with a fully cooperative game, or even evil outnumbering good!
  •  Showdown: This is a 4-player 2v2 Scenario, where players don't use Identities and are simply good or evil (as dictated by their Allegiance tokens). Players do not know their teammate and discover that through the game.

The fourth Scenario (available for 3, 4, or 5 players) and newest addition is Fantasy Draft. Where in the other Scenarios you get the feeling of starting small and building up a team, Fantasy Draft already prepares you with a full team.  Sounds easy, right? Well, the Villains start off much tougher, you have one less round to complete your mission, and there's an additional event token, so you can imagine that the Scenario ramps up the difficulty.

Drafting also gives you plenty of fun choices and ensures that one player doesn't get all of the most powerful Heroes. We've added the Scenarios to Tabletop Simulator, though likely automation will happen at a later date. Try it out, and let me know your thoughts in the comments! Special thanks to Tony who suggested a drafting Scenario.

(Drafting is a mechanic where players will be dealt a number of cards (in this case, 6 Heroes), will get to pick 1 to keep, and pass the rest to their right. They will then take the 5 cards from the player on their left, keep 1, and pass the right to their right. This continues until you have a selected pool of 6 Heroes to choose from.)

Many of you that have played Vigilante have run into the Hero Fragment. Her ability gives quite a bit of flexibility and consistency, which is one of the reasons why she's the star on this new Agency card.

I've always wanted to make The Agency a powerful deck of cards to draw from with the drawback of lower influence. In the City Deck, you can find a card called Research (starring Captain Judgment), which allows you to look at the top 2 cards of the deck, keep one, and put another on the bottom of the deck. Decisions like these along with many others gives players more control over their own fate, which ultimately makes the game more fun (vs. just hoping for the best)!

In The Agency, you'll now find Classified Intel - because The Agency has more resources at their disposal, their research far surpasses what you're able to find on the internet about Captain Judgment. Classified Intel is like a 'super-Research', allowing you to look at 3 cards and keep 1. Having 8 of these added to The Agency deck will surely create some interesting decisions in your next play-through of Vigilante.

Thanks again to Keven for this suggestion!

I hope that you're excited as I am about this new content. Thanks again for your support!

Crystal Carnage - Technisha Glides into a Neighbourhood Near You!
about 3 years ago – Wed, Apr 07, 2021 at 04:11:24 PM

We're 83% funded - well on our way to funding, and have a lot of steam and new card reveals over the coming week and a half!

This Thursday, I'll be interviewed by Patrick Rauland of the Indie Board Game Designers podcast. I'm excited to take part, and we'll be touching on some really interesting topics.

What was that title about? We have  new villain for you - check her out here:

We're pleased to announce the introduction of Technisha! Fear never looked so fabulous. Similar to Benito's Crimson Warrior, Laurel also won the villain contest with her description (and corresponding art) for Technisha. Tan Ho Sim did an amazing job bringing Technisha to life with some great direction by Laurel.

Technisha rides her telepathy-activated hover board across town, allowing her to control long-range drones with precision strike technology. Her aim is to take out other vigilantes with powers and absorb their knowledge. As a new leader of the Free Metahumans, Technisha is truly a force to be feared by our heroes!

In Vigilante, Technisha is one of a few cards that can manipulate the event track. Upon defeat, she'll switch up the game state. If you're a good player, you might be able to get rid of that annoying Jailbreak* or if you're an evil player, you might be able to add a Jailbreak* event to the track. The ability is largely inspired by one of our backers (Keven) who has been actively testing and providing some amazing ideas.

*Jailbreak frees villains from your jail that you worked so hard to defeat. Defeating villains and placing them in your jail is how good players win!

Here's the full card:

Congratulation Laurel and thanks again for everyone's support, and stay tuned for more exciting announcements!

Content Recap and a New Villain Enters the Fray!
about 3 years ago – Sun, Apr 04, 2021 at 08:43:16 PM

We're on our 6th day and nearly 80% funded! Thanks to everyone for getting us this far - we don't have much further to go now.

Here's a quick content recap over the last few days:

We've run a few contests in our Facebook group - the first of which was a chance for participants to become a villain in Vigilante. Benito was one of two winners (stay tuned for the other villain!), and becomes Crimson Warrior, the 21st Lv. 2 Villain included in the game!

The Crimson Warrior had been struggling for years between his two personalities when he got his powers; the ability to control energy and mould it into objects. His one personality, the Crimson Warrior, had taken control of the driver's seat with a penchant for seeing the world burn. His other personality, adopting the name Sapphire Paladin,  is a light deep inside, struggling to gain control.

Within the game, the Crimson Warrior is a tough foe, but if you beat him, the Sapphire Paladin helps you by crafting an Equipment for your heroes to use!

Here's the full card:

Until next time, thanks again for supporting Vigilante!
